Special Employee Mention for her Outstanding Work: Olha Beno

MARCH 2023

1. Where are you from?

When someone asks me where I’m from, I proudly answer, “I’m from Ukraine.” I love my country and my people; ukrainians are indomitable and invincible 🙂

2. When did you come to Canada, and under what circumstances?

On February 24, 2022 (a year ago), my country was attacked by the Russian military, and our lives changed forever, as have the lives of all Ukrainians. We helped as much as possible, but I was worried about the future. I have a daughter, which concerned me very much, so my family and I took a step toward drastic changes, and at the end of August, we moved to Winnipeg, Canada.

3. Could you tell us about your work and educational background?

I came to Canada from my city of Ivano-Frankivsk and started building a new life. I am a lawyer by education and worked in the field of criminal-executive legislation. I am happy that we decided to move to Winnipeg.

4. What are you doing for fellow Ukrainians today?

I found my place at the Immigrant Centre where I can help newcomers from Ukraine to adapt to Canadian life. I understand people’s feelings when they arrive to a new country, so I try to help them. My job is to help get newly-arrived Ukrainians temporary accommodation in a hotel, removing restrictions on their work permit. Also, I refer them to get additional help at our agency and other organizations. I am happy to be a part of the Immigrant Centre and to have the opportunity to be helpful to people.
