Country: Russia

Date Hired: May 2024

Job Title: Material Handler

Employer: Carte International

How did the Immigrant Centre help you to find a job in Canada?
First of all, IC helped turn my 3-page resume into a 1-page one. Now I understand that I would have had no chance with it. IC helped improve my interview skills. And IC explained how the Canadian labour market actually works. Comparing the labour market to an iceberg, where the tip of the iceberg is ads, and the underwater iceberg is vacant positions not shown on social networks, is really illustrutive and helpfull. Networking is running things.

What types of job search techniques did you use to find your job?
I first applied online on both the job search website and the company website, then visited the employer and shared my resume. And I told every new person that I was seeking job.

What differences have you noticed between working in Canada and working in your home country?
It's funny, but the working itself is the same, at least in my experience. Only the job search differs a lot.

What advice would you give to immigrants and newcomers looking for work?
I understand how hard it is to admit, but networking really drives things. I am an introvert and I understand how hard it is, but I'm afraid, it's a necessity here. So, this is the first wall to break down.
