Corina Coombe

In the summer of 2014, Corina Coombe approached the Immigrant Centre with the idea of volunteering her time and expertise to start a quilting class. Since her first class in September 2014, Corina has volunteered for over 500 hours, and has taught 10 classes to 53 students.

Corina is a patient instructor who enjoys sharing her knowledge about sewing and quilting with her students. “Many of the clients usually have some sewing experience but not quilting, so every day is a new first; the first seam, the first 4 patch, the first project… I get satisfaction from the clients’ happiness when they finish their first project.”

The quilting course is typically five to six weeks long depending on the project. Classes are offered once a week on Mondays, from 9:45 am – 3:00 pm. Corina’s students however, are not only learning valuable sewing and quilting skills; the class is also an opportunity for many of them to practice their English and meet new friends.

Corina is very passionate about the quilting program, and has donated her own resources (sewing machines, thread, fabric etc.) and personal funds to acquire supplies. The Manitoba Prairie Quilters and Assiniboine Circle Quilt Group, along with various individuals have also generously donated to the program.

In order for these classes to continue however, there is an ongoing need for funding and fabric donations. To inquire about making a donation to the quilting program or upcoming class dates, please contact the Immigrant Centre at 204-943-9969 Ext 300.

The Immigrant Centre thanks you Corina for your time and dedication.
