Volunteer of the Month

Gabriele Goldstone

Gabriele Goldstone has been an Immigrant Centre volunteer for almost three years. She joined the Centre in July 2017 and since then has been a committed volunteer, contributing 145 hours as a One-on-One English Tutor.

Gabriele was kind enough to share how she became involved with the Immigrant Centre, and what her experience has been as a volunteer.

How did you hear about the Immigrant Centre (IC)?

I just googled “volunteer opportunities with immigrants.”

Why did you decide to volunteer at IC?

Even though I was born in Canada, my parents were middle-aged immigrants and as the first-born, I remember feeling like an outsider. Throughout my growing up years I was always reminded to be grateful for the opportunities of living in Canada. So, when I retired I wanted to give back a bit of what my parents received. I also appreciate the positive energy, courage and hopefulness that newcomers radiate.

Being involved with them is like traveling without the expense and the hassles. It opens my mind to new foods, cultures and mindsets. I might be helping them with their English, but they’re teaching me about places beyond Canada and about the resilience of the human spirit!

What has your volunteer experience been like at IC?

I’ve made new friends and I appreciate the training opportunities and the flexibility.

Did you learn anything about the IC that you didn’t know before volunteering?

I’ve learned that the IC is managed by caring people and that it’s super user-friendly. My only regret is that I didn’t know about it when I was younger. I think I would have liked a career in immigration. On the other hand, as a One-on-One Tutor, I can focus on being a friend. And I like that.
