Volunteer of the Month

Manjot Mann

I am a fourth year, full-time university student at the University of Winnipeg. I was introduced to the Immigrant Centre through a university program and have been with the Centre since September 2020. I have been assisting the Volunteer Services department, primarily assisting with the One-on-One English program and other administrative duties as needed.

I chose to have my placement with the Immigrant Centre as I was intrigued with the different aspects of work they do with newcomers. Not only does the Immigrant Centre provide basic settlement services but also programs that assist with integration, which I find to be very important.  I have been enjoying my time volunteering with the Centre as I have had the opportunity to assist newcomers while also expanding my skill set. The work I have done has allowed me to understand the difficulties that newcomers face, especially those who have arrived in Canada during the pandemic.

It has been great to see how the One-on-One English tutoring program not only allows newcomers to enhance/develop their English, but also allows newcomers to build relationships with their tutors and break isolation for those who are living by themselves during the pandemic. This opportunity has also allowed me to deepen my understanding regarding the settlement process.

Overall, my experience at the Immigrant Centre has been very enjoyable and a learning process. I am grateful for the knowledge and skills I have developed during my time at the Centre. Everyone at the Centre has been very supportive and always willing to teach me about the work different departments engage in. I look forward to continuing being involved with the work the Immigrant Centre does.
