Volunteer of the Month

Polina Andrushko

When I first moved to Canada in June 2019, Immigrant Centre was among the first places to visit that my friends recommended. Everybody there was so supportive and welcoming, so I felt very comfortable.

Back home I had a degree in English and worked as an ESL Instructor. I always felt that teaching is very rewarding; it is a way to connect with others by assisting them, showing them a new world of undiscovered and learning from them as well.

After moving to Winnipeg, I was looking for opportunities to keep doing what I love and also give back to the community that was supportive since the very first day. The first place I checked was the Immigrant Centre and I am honoured to have an opportunity to volunteer here.

I have so much joy volunteering with IC. It is a very special bond that I have with my student. I love being able to help people to explore a new language, to break common stereotypes and integrate into society, being an active member of it. I am so grateful to see the growth of my student, as well as of myself.

What is more, I appreciate opportunities to learn at IC as there are workshops for volunteers that give support and inspiration. It is an amazing chance to acquire new skills and techniques, have discussions with other instructors in order to be a better help for my students.

Immigrant Centre is a place where everybody finds something for themselves, where everybody feels supported and appreciated. I am grateful for all the opportunities I gained there.
