Ted Wakefield

Meet Ted Wakefield, a Conversation Group Facilitator at the Immigrant Centre since April 2015. Although it’s been just over a year since he joined the Immigrant Centre, Ted’s interest in newcomers
began years ago.

Volunteering for two years in the Winnipeg School Division 1 Adult EAL classes led him to take the TEAL program at the University of Winnipeg. Shortly after finishing his practicum and looking ways to build on his TEAL skills, Ted applied for a volunteer position at the Immigrant Centre and soon after was hired to facilitate a conversation group class for newcomers.

Of his experience as a Conversation Group Facilitator at the Immigrant Centre Ted says, “It is really interesting meeting people from different parts of the world; refugees, people from Africa, Asia… people who’ve come with their families, others who are here all alone.” Speaking fondly of his students Ted adds, “People are so engaged; they obviously want to learn.”

Ted’s other life experiences include working with UNICEF Canada in Toronto and spending a month in Nicaragua observing and reporting on human rights issues during the 1970s. Originally a journalist, he has 30-plus years of experience as a writer/communicator and currently works in Media and Public Relations at Great-West Life

The Immigrant Centre thanks you, Ted, for your time and dedication.
