Volunteer of the Month

Fernanda Bendayan

Fernanda has generously volunteered as a Cooking and Nutrition Class Assistant since September 2002.  According to Nutrition Services Manager Briana Henry, “Fer has brought positivity and compassion to the cooking and nutrition program. As a Culinary Arts student at Red River College, she has a passion for cooking and baking and is eager to develop herself personally and professionally. I’ve observed her improve her public speaking skills and enjoy teaching and offering guidance to our clients.

Fer is an exceptional volunteer who works hard to ensure the class runs smoothly and everyone feels supported and valued. Her enthusiasm and can-do attitude create an uplifting atmosphere, motivating clients and fellow volunteers. I want to express my appreciation for her dedication and positive spirit, which have been invaluable to the program.”

How did you first hear about the Immigrant Centre (IC)?

I am from Argentina and arrived in Canada in April 2022 as an international English student, to continue as a Culinary Arts student at Red River College. I initially came with my two daughters and my husband was able to join us the following year. The first time I heard about IC was through my level 4/5 English instructor, who told us about their services and the help they provide to newcomers.

What attracted you to this organization in particular?

I was initially attracted to IC because of its selfless support for newcomers. IC offers comprehensive assistance in their services, and their dedication is truly commendable. One particular event that caught my attention was a presentation by Briana at the RRC on nutrition. Since it was directly related to my academic program, I found it incredibly interesting because it combined two things I like to do, helping others and cooking.

Why did you decide to volunteer?

I volunteered at the IC to contribute to the community and immerse myself in Canadian culture. It is a great opportunity to help others adapt to our new country and share life experiences as a newcomer.

For work reasons, I have lived in several countries, and I know how difficult it is when you just arrive in an unknown place and start over. Beginnings are always difficult, no matter how many times you do it is always hard.

What was your volunteer experience like at IC?

My experience was wonderful, being able to volunteer at IC allowed me to meet incredible people and learn from each of them. The most exciting thing is sharing a special moment with clients and feeling at home, forming a big family. I hope in the future, when I finish my studies I will be able to continue Volunteering. I am very grateful to IC and Briana for this opportunity.
