Volunteer of the Month

Roula Al-Kayal

Roula Al-Kayal is a filmmaker. When she was asked to help our Employment Services department with a video project about newcomer services, she generously volunteered over 60 hours of her time, expertise and equipment to direct, film and edit a series of short videos.

Roula has been making films for over 12 years. “I have done cinematic works such as short movies and TV shows and programs in different cities such as Syria before the war, and Egypt and Turkey. Since arriving in Canada, Roula has volunteered at a youth program organized by the local Kurdish Initiative, teaching eager young participants about acting for the camera and physical theatre.

How did you first hear about the Immigrant Centre (IC)?

I have heard about the IC from a member of my Syrian community (Omran).

What attracted you to this organization in particular?

I was impressed to learn how much IC does for the newcomers in Winnipeg. I believed in the importance of services provided for the newcomers of diverse backgrounds, the support they get on every stage of their journey when arriving in Winnipeg is incredible and deserves praise and publicity.

Why did you decide to volunteer?

In addition to the above mentioned reasons, I decided to volunteer for the IC because of how much Omran has told me about the organization and how he encouraged me every step of the way.

What was your volunteer experience like at IC?

It was an absolute pleasure to get to know the team (both personally and professionally), work alongside them, and feel supported and encouraged to do my very best.
