Danylo Stytsun – Ukraine – Sales/Warehouse

Country: Ukraine

Date Hired: October 2022

Job Title: Sales Representative/Warehouse Worker

What types of job search techniques did you use to find your job?
I used to work as a sales representative for several years, and I thought I could find a job in this field in Canada. I got my resume prepared and sent it to several companies. One of them replied very quickly and the next day I had an interview with them, and in another couple of weeks I started working as a sales representative.

What differences have you noticed between working in Canada and working in your home country?
Before coming to Canada I used to work for many years as an English teacher in China. However, I realised that it would take a significant portion of time to become a teacher in Canada, as getting a diploma recognised is not a fast process.

What advice would you give to immigrants and newcomers looking for work?
Hello, I’m Dan from Ukraine! I came to Canada last year. Before coming to Canada I used to work for many years as an English teacher in China. However, I realised that it would take a significant portion of time to become a teacher in Canada, as getting a diploma recognised is not a fast process. So, I decided to use my other skills which I gained during my life in Ukraine. I used to work as a sales representative for several years, and I thought I could find a job in this field in Canada. I got my resume prepared and sent it to several companies. One of them replied very quickly and the next day I had an interview with them, and in another couple of weeks I started working as a sales representative. However, later I found out that this role wasn’t eligible for immigration programs and I asked my supervisors to move me from sales to warehouse department. All my supervisors and other colleagues were very helpful and supportive and helped to make my transition to the warehouse team as smooth as possible. Now I’m very happy with my new role and see many good prospects in the future. My advice to the current job seekers is simple - victory loves preparation. So, don’t rush and get well prepared for your job search and interviews. This includes: 1. Language - as you’re supposed to communicate with your coworkers all the time, try to improve your language abilities as much as possible. This will help to avoid misunderstandings at work and will make you more efficient at the workplace. 2. Resume - get it prepared for each particular job offer. Stick to the point with your skills required for the job and don’t overload it with unnecessary details. 3. Be flexible - don’t be afraid to try something new. Maybe, you won’t be able to find your dream job immediately, so don’t waste your time and try something you haven’t done before. 4. Be patient - sometimes it takes time to find a suitable job. Use this time to improve yourself and your skills (language, getting new certifications or qualifications etc).
